Dubai temporarily closes Ras Al Khor sanctuary for Dh650-million development

The contract for the first phase was awarded, and it will be completed by the end of next year

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary has temporarily closed as part of plans to develop the facility, in a Dh650-million project announced earlier.

The contract for the first phase of the development was awarded, and it will be completed by the end of next year.

The wildlife sanctuary is a popular spot for residents who look to bask in nature’s nest, as thousands of birds settle on the wetlands at Ras Al Khor. The sea of pink flamingos is a favourite sight during winter, but the reserve boasts other species too.

Grey herons, black-winged stilts, osprey and flocks of other birds are protected, with the sanctuary fenced off; both nature lovers and nature can peacefully and safely co-exist here.

The wetland features a variety of salt flats, intertidal mudflats, mangroves and lagoons for the birds to use as their nests and individual habitats.

The sanctuary has several bird hides, with free entry, which serve as a unique viewing point for visitors to marvel at the winged creatures.

Dh650-million project

The first phase of the project includes a 144 per cent increase in water bodies within the place, expanding their total area to 74 hectares.

Additionally, 10 hectares of mudflats (salt flats) will be added, which provide crucial feeding grounds for migratory birds and support a variety of marine and plant life.

In the second phase, the habitat will be enhanced to attract more wildlife, with more native vegetation grown. In addition, facilities for guests will be enhanced.

The project is expected to increase carbon dioxide absorption by 60 per cent, contributing significantly to the environment,
